Habit of Community

Godly habits are what position us to receive grace.

The first habit we are going to look at is the habit of community.

Why is community important? God never intended for us to live alone or to be alone. He made us to be communal people.

Genesis 2:18

Acts 2:42-47 - We see people who started out like us, as tourists.

Context of the story:

 - All the followers of Jesus (about 120) were meeting in Jerusalem to celebrate pentecost.

 - Pentecost is 1 of  3 Major Holy days.

        - Pentecost is also known as the “Feast of First Fruits”

  - Pentecost started off as a Celebration of the Harvest and became bigger because ultimately all things provided come from God.

        - Pentecost takes place 50 days after Passover which is when Jesus was crucified and resurrected.

Pentecost was a big deal, people came from all over to celebrate this Holy day.

There were no less than 15 regions represented there at Pentecost.

The city was filled with tourists!

The city of Jerusalem is filled with tourists and God decides to launch His church.

God pours out His spirit like never before:

        - Tongues of fire - Nobody gets burned

        - Sound of Wind - Nobody feels it

        - Talk in native tongues but everyone hears their own language.

The tourists responded and a community of 1000’s of people was formed.

A community of not just size but also of diversity.

How is this large of a community ministered to and served?

Acts 2:42

Two habits:

1 - Met regularly to listen to the apostles.

2 - Gathered in Small Groups in each others homes.

They built Relationships, engaged in discipleship and reached out to others in need.

Why is community important?

1- Not good for man to be alone!

2- God shows up in our midst!

Genesis 11:1-9 Tower of Babel

When the church acts like a community, God uses it for His divine purpose in advancing His Kingdom.

Exodus 34:1-5

When the church acts like a community God stands with it!

Numbers 11:25

When the church acts like a community God speaks directly to it!

Being a church is a mission not an intermission! We need to be about the work of God and advancing His Kingdom!!
