It Ain't Perfect

In 1965 Charles Shultz presented to the world a bunch of misfit characters that were for all intense and purposes, trying to figure out this thing called Christmas. Charlie Brown and his faithful beagle Snoopy present a light-hearted Christmas show that has become the 2nd longest running Christmas to air.

Within this classic show Charlie Brown is very distraught over the meaning of Christmas and his friend Lucy suggests that he directs the Christmas play. During this endeavor Charlie Brown needs to get a Christmas tree. He returns with what is presumed as the worst Christmas tree ever. It was nothing more than a stick.

At the end of this production the true meaning of Christmas has been discovered and the magic of Christmas has transformed the sickly tree into a magnificent emblem of Christmas.

The perfect tree! Doesn’t that just warm your heart! Everything is perfect!

We do this very thing. We approach the holidays wanting everything to be perfect.

Tree, Meal, gifts, Lights, napkins, Decorations, tablecloths, children’s behavior, spouses manners – It all has to be perfect, for what purpose? So we can gloat and brag about how perfect we are? So, we can set the bar higher for next year?

Holiday truth – It is not going to be perfect! – Accept this and your holiday will be more enjoyable.

It is not going to be perfect because Life is not perfect this side of Heaven.

We are looking at the holiday season but if you want to get technical we really have a skewed view of life because we expect everything to be perfect.

Spouses, children, how people treat us, traffic, Starbucks in every city, no diseases, our loved ones not dying…. list goes on and on.

We spend so much of our time dreaming about the “Perfect” world we forget to live the intended life God designed for us.

Life is not perfect this side of Heaven.

Jesus teaches us about life and perfection in John16:33

John 16:33

33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Break it down:

John 16:33a

33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.

May have peace – This is an indicator that we may sometimes face times that are less peaceful! Jesus is telling us that when these times come we are to find peace (IN HIM) No substitutions!

Why is this a big deal?

John 16:33b

33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble.

We all love the promises from God!

- Never leave you nor forsake you

- Confess with your mouth I am Lord then you will be saved

- You will spend eternity in heaven with me

These are awesome!! But when it comes to other promises we are not so keen we want them!

In this world you will have trouble.

I think it is interesting that Jesus states it like this…. in this world. What does that lead to? What is he talking about?

Here we can catch a glimpse of the Kingdom of God! This world is going to pass away, and we will live in another world, a new heaven and a new Earth.

Right now we live in a status of “not yetness”. We are not experiencing the full KOG.

Jesus says, “In this world you WILL HAVE trouble!”

Do you see the problem with trying to make everything perfect?

When Jesus says this, he is not saying it is your everyday,

Can’t find my car keys,

Bad hair day,

The kid wrote on the wall with a sharpie,

I spilled wine on my white shirt,

The pool is dirty,

I forgot to get the milk on the way home kind of trouble!

No, Jesus is talking about life changing, faith shaking trouble, the kind of trouble where you are not, cannot, will not be prepared.

9/11 kind of trouble

Katrina kind of trouble

Cancer kind of trouble

Your friend or relative killed in combat kind of trouble

Loss of eyes, limbs, hearing kind of trouble

Heart attack kind of trouble

School shooting kind of trouble

Still born/miscarriage kind of trouble

This is the stuff that messes you up in life! You are walking along everything is fine and the next thing you know you have 6 months to live, or a plane crashes into a building and now your loved ones are dead.

Side note:

Don’t live like you have tomorrow

Don’t wait until you are facing death to start living.

This is why Jesus wants his disciples to know where peace comes from.

John 16:33c

33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart!

This is NOT a cliché. We have this funny way of making Jesus’ words a cliché for a bumper sticker!

Honk if you take heart!!

Don’t hate; take heart!

Share this status within the next minute and you can take heart!!

How about this one: HELLO!! You are living in a sinful world full of sinful, fallen people; get over yourself, you ARE GOING TO EXPERIENCE TROUBLES!!

Christians always want to sugar coat things! I do not want to sugar coat things because people will want to eat it and then blame me because they are over weight!

Funny, yes, but it is true! Sugar coat the truth people will say, “Well the pastor said…”

Jesus is saying you are going to have trouble in this world but, DO not be crushed, do not loose heart, Do Not forget who I AM!!

Why does Jesus’ words “Take heart” make sense?

John 16:33d

33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus said take heart because I have overcome this world!!

What does this mean?

2000 years ago, God willingly came into this world historically and physically.

Came into this world overcame our sin, then over came death and he is coming back for us and he is going to take us where there is no more pain, no more suffering, no more trouble!

Jesus says, “Take heart, because I have all authority, I have all dominion I have the only right to proclaim true rule over this world because I came down an succeeded where the first Adam failed, I took back the deed to this Earth and I gave it to the church who will take my message of reconciliation and advance my kingdom to the very ends of the Earth proclaiming the message of TAKE HEART”

Jesus Christ has CONQURED this world! You are no longer slaves to it!

Jesus says that trouble is real, but so is He, therefore, we will experience life but not a perfect life!

Not the perfect Christmas tree

Not the perfect marriage

Not the perfect people

Not the perfect meals

We will never be perfect or experience perfection this side of Heaven.

God offers to take the worst in our lives and somehow HE in all His sovereignty produces grace and accomplishes the best in us. That’s what He offers!

Charles Shultz the creator of the Peanuts was a religious man the best that can be told. His comics were peppered with the gospel message as seen in the Peanuts Christmas.

Shultz faced his own “trouble” just prior to his retirement in 1999 he had a stroke and then cancer where he lost most of his functionality. At his retirement ceremony he made a comment that I have heard other people say before, “I never dreamed that this would happen to me.”

I am certain most of us can relate to this to some degree in our lives. We were young and we mapped out our lives – it’s perfect! Then, trouble happens…

We all go through stuff in our lives that we never would have imagined.

Jesus said:

John 16:33

33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Maybe you gave your life to Christ and then you became delusional, thinking everything will be perfect now. You got severely disappointed and now you fulfill your Christmas and Easter obligations and that’s it.

Or maybe you realize that you have no peace because you do not know Christ and you see other Christians around you and they have it rough so you avoid even trying to understand the idea of a man paying for all your sin so you could be free.

I do not have an answer for everything that is going on and I know there is no simple answer that will make it all make sense. I have no bumper sticker cliché.

There is nothing to wrap up and put a bow on and make it sound and look good.

BUT, I can tell you this:

There is more to this world than just trouble.

There is more to this world than just difficulty and struggle.

There is a savior who has overcome sin and death and because there is an overcoming savior we are privileged to say Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas doesn’t mean everything is perfect.

It means that my life isn’t perfect but I am in a relationship with an overcoming savior.

2000years ago a man left his throne in heaven to bring light into a dark world.

John 1:1-14

Jesus was the light in the world and the world could not overcome it!

Jesus came into this world defeated sin and death and brought peace!

Until Next time…Shalom
