Worrying about Christmas?

In 1965 there premiered a TV Christmas special and to this day it is still loved and watched. Charley Brown’s Christmas is ranked #2 as the longest running Christmas TV show, next to Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer.

Christmastime is here, Happiness and cheer. And for Peanuts fans everywhere, it just wouldn't be Christmas without this classic holiday delight. Christmas lights may be twinkling red and green, but Charlie Brown has the Yuletide blues. To get in the holiday spirit, he takes Lucy's advice and directs the Christmas play. And what's a Christmas play without a Christmas tree? But everyone makes fun of the short, spindly never-green Charlie Brown brings back - until the real meaning of Christmas works its magic once again.

As we enter into the Christmas season I want to take a moment and discuss the spirit of un-Christmas!

A lot of people this time of year are un-Christmas-ee because they WORRY!

They worry about having the perfect tree, perfect meals, perfect gift – All of these things are self-imposed worries that really diminish the overall spirit of Christmas.

The celebrated TV show reminds us that we need to stop worrying about things that have no eternal ramifications on the Advancement of Kingdom.

Lets’ look at what Paul says about worrying about the big stuff…

Philippians 4:6-9

Couple of points I want to pull from this:

1 – Do not worry!

We hate this phrase! Truth of the matter is, some people actually like to worry because it makes them feel productive! Makes them feel like they are accomplishing something!

These types of people get ticked when other people do not worry about things.

Worrying does not accomplish a thing as a matter of fact, it does just the opposite, and it is counterproductive.

Jesus told us very plainly not to worry.

Matthew 6:25-34

2 - Worrying is NOT planning for the future!!

Worrying is being held hostage – trying to control something that cannot be controlled!!

Definition- Worry - give way to anxiety or unease; allow one's mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.

3- Worrying is destructive!

We suspend our worrying with temporary fixes such as alcohol, food, TV, movies etc.

Because when we are not worrying then we feel like we have a void and that needs to be filled. Paul says to fill that void with everything Good! In other words “Give it to God”

We tend to be ok with the little things in life but when the big things come along we think God is to small to fix it. OR we let God take care of the big things and then we try to manage the little things. Why can’t we just give Him everything?

Paul was telling the church in Philippi that in the middle of all your worrying remember to give thanks!

Philippians 4:6

What? Thank God for the worrying? No!

Thank you Lord for cancer, lost job, financial problems, and all the hurts in life! – No this is not what Paul is saying.

How about being thankful for what God is going to do? – This is a great place to start, a close 2nd but I still do not think that it is what Paul was talking about.

I think what Paul is talking about is being thankful for the faithfulness of God!  Remembering the blessing of His son dying on the cross for us and providing us with eternal life because everything fades in comparison when we look at the eternal ramifications of God’s faithfulness.

Why should we pray with Thanksgiving? If we don’t focus on the faithfulness of God then whatever it is that we are worrying about will consume us!

You should pray that your Joy never gets robbed!

How do you not get worried?

Find the beauty! Paul is not saying, “Live in denial” God is not a fairy who will wave a wand and make everything easy and comfortable!!

There are a lot of things to worry about. But Paul is telling us not to focus on the ugliness of sin but on the beauty of God’s faithfulness.

Ugliness will consume you; the beauty of God’s faithfulness will set you free.

We need to stop and realize all the things God has done for us and how great His faithfulness really is.

When we get hit with a whopper of a worry we can say God, I remember you, I give to you and I receive from you!!

Until Next time…Shalom
